Cape Henlopen Students Excel in Optimist Contests

Sanchez Raymond receives her award

The Optimist Club of Sussex County is very proud to announce that two students from Cape Henlopen High School have continued to excel in both the Essay and the Oratorical Scholarship Contests sponsored by Optimist International.  During the past three months, Madeline Betts, Essay Contest, and Sanchez Raymond, Oratorical Contest, were both first place winners at the local level that included students from Sussex County schools. Both students continued to win at the next level of competition when their winning entries competed against the Maryland and Delaware Optimist Clubs.

Madeline Betts, whose essay "When All the World’s Problems are Solved, is Optimism Still Necessary?" was entered in the MDSD (Maryland/Southern Delaware) Essay contest, where her essay came in third place. The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live.

Sanchez Raymond, whose speech “Is There a Fine Line Between Optimism and Reality?” won the Oratorical Zone Contest held in early April when she competed against the Southern Maryland Optimist Clubs.  With this win, Sanchez was able to continue to the MDSD District Level Competition on April 27th.  This past weekend, Sanchez again won at the District Level and will now compete at the Optimist Region Level, where she will continue to use her oratorical skills against Optimist Clubs in the Mid-Atlantic region.  This next level of competition will take place in July of 2019 at the St. Louis University, Missouri, with the winning entries moving to the Optimist Oratorical World Championships also in July.  The Optimist Oratorical Contest gives youngsters the chance to speak to the world. More than $150,000 in college scholarships funded by the Optimist International Foundations is awarded annually from this program.

Congratulations to Madeline and Sanchez, the Optimist Club of Sussex County is very proud of your accomplishments! Your hard work and talent illustrates how our organization works to "Bring Out the Best in Kids!"
