Standard Response Protocol

CHSD Standard Response Protocol

At the Cape Henlopen School District, the safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance, which is why we are continuously looking for ways to expand and improve the security measures taken in our buildings.

In May of 2023, the Board of Education approved the District’s plan to expand the security staff throughout the District, and seven constables were hired, including a lead constable to oversee the team. In addition to the constables, the District will add a third Delaware State Police School Resource Officer to our safety team beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. You can learn more about the team of SROs and constables on our website at www.capehenlopenschools.com/safety-team

In addition to the security staff, the District has also worked to partner with the Delaware Emergency Management Association (DEMA) and the I Love You Guys Foundation, a national organization that aims to provide school districts with resources and materials as it relates to emergency response protocols and communication. Our administrators and staff began implementing the Standard Response Protocols (SRP) into their training in August 2022 and many have participated in statewide training hosted by DEMA officials. We are excited to launch the Standard Response Protocols with our district families, beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.

SRP Common Language

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on an all-hazards approach instead of individual scenarios. Like the Incident Command System (ICS), SRP utilizes clear common language while allowing for flexibility in the protocol.

The premise is simple - there are five specific actions that can be done during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a “Term of Art”, followed by a “Directive.” Execution of the action is performed by active participants, including students, staff, teachers, and first responders. The SRP is based on the following actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter
