How much time does it take?

We ask for a commitment of thirty minutes per week. That doesn’t mean a mentor can’t miss a week, be sick or take a vacation, but we do ask for as much consistency as possible to help build the mentor/mentee relationship. The program runs from September through May during the school day.

How do I become a mentor?

The Cape Henlopen School District has partnered with a non-profit program called Creative Mentoring. You can become a mentor by clicking here, and visiting the Connecting Generations website. It will take you directly to the Creative Mentoring page, where you can begin the application process. Be sure to choose the Cape school at which you would like to be a mentor. All background checks and training is provided through Creative Mentoring at no cost!

What is a Mentor?

A mentor is an adult role model who provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, and reinforcement. Mentors are good listeners, who are caring and who want to help young people showcase their strengths that are already there. Things that may seem easy or straightforward to an adult are not necessarily so for a student. It’s easier than you think to make a difference in a young person’s life. You might play a game, read a book, color a picture, or help with homework, but just being there is the most important thing.

We have mentoring programs at every grade level from K-12, in the following schools:
