Staff and Students Go “Over the Edge” to Support Special Olympics Delaware

Five staff members from Lewes Elementary, and three Cape High seniors recently stepped far outside their comfort zones in support of a meaningful cause by participating in Over the Edge, a fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Delaware.

Held annually in downtown Wilmington, the event challenges participants to rappel 17 stories down a high-rise building after raising funds to support Special Olympics athletes and programs across the state.

Representing their school community with courage and enthusiasm, staff members joined supporters from across Delaware in raising awareness and funds for individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports, leadership, and inclusion programs offered by Special Olympics Delaware.

Among the participants was Dr. Kimberly Corbidge, who has participated in this event the last 4 years. She noted that once again the experience was both challenging and inspiring. “Participating in Over the Edge is always an incredible reminder of the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone to support others,” said Dr. Corbidge. “Special Olympics Delaware creates life-changing opportunities for athletes across our state, and it was an honor for our staff to be part of an event that celebrates inclusion, perseverance, and community. I’m extremely proud of our team for taking on this challenge together.” The fundraiser supports year-round sports training, competitions, health programs, and leadership opportunities for Special Olympics Delaware athletes.

School staff members said the experience also served as an opportunity to model teamwork, service, and leadership for students while supporting an organization dedicated to empowering athletes of all abilities. “This event truly demonstrates the power of community,” Dr. Corbidge continued. “Whether cheering from the ground or rappelling down the building, everyone came together for a shared purpose, which was supporting athletes and promoting inclusion throughout Delaware.”

In addition, three Cape Henlopen High School students, and members of the Best Buddies Club and Unified Sports also teamed up to go Over the Edge. Seniors Liam Ramsey, Lucy Tollett, and Mason Furman repelled down the 17-story building and raised both awareness and funds funds for the Special Olympics Delaware.
