In a powerful act of remembrance and education, Warren Rosenfeld, owner of Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen, and son and grandson of Holocaust survivors, has generously funded Beacon Middle School’s 8th grade field trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

The donation covers all travel costs for 188 students, chaperones, and teachers, ensuring that every 8th grader—regardless of financial means—will have the opportunity to engage directly with one of the most significant historical museums in the country. Beacon is currently the only school in Delaware that Mr. Rosenfeld sponsored during the 2024-25 school year for this incredible learning opportunity.

“This is deeply personal for me,” said Mr. Rosenfeld. “My father and members of my extended family survived the horrors of the Holocaust, and I grew up understanding how vital it is to remember that history—and to teach it. These students will bear witness to stories that must never be forgotten.”

The field trip, that takes place on May 2, is intended to give students a first-hand understanding of the Holocaust’s impact, while reinforcing the values of empathy, tolerance, and historical awareness. Educators at Beacon Middle School have praised the donation as an impactful and meaningful opportunity for students. “This trip would not have been possible without Mr. Rosenfeld’s incredible generosity,” said Dr. Christopher Maddox, ELA/Social Studies teacher at Beacon Middle and coordinator of the trip. “Learning about the Holocaust in our classroom is one thing. Seeing the artifacts, hearing the stories, and standing in a place of remembrance—it’s transformative.”

On Wednesday, April 30, Beacon Middle School welcomed Mr. Rosenfeld to their school to share some of his family history with the 8th grade students prior to their trip to the museum on May 2.  “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to present my family’s Holocaust history and experiences to teachers, administrators, the District Superintendent, and the entire 8th grade at Beacon Middle School”, said Mr. Rosenfeld. “They are all going to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C on Friday, May 2, with funding provided by Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli. Eight schools in all are going on these funded trips, with the last two schools going the first week in June. I can think of no greater reason to spend this money, and the joy I receive from it is immeasurable.”

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum serves as a living memorial to the millions of victims of Nazi persecution and as a powerful educational resource for combating hatred and genocide.

Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen a longstanding part of the Ocean City, Maryland, South Bethany and Rehoboth Beach communities. It is not only known for its excellence in providing an authentic, traditional Jewish deli experience by providing a wide variety of both traditional and unique dishes, but also for its commitment to giving back to the community and fostering future generations.
