Mariner Middle Students Explore the Power of Static Electricity in Science Class

Eighth-grade science students at Mariner Middle School recently had the opportunity to witness the fascinating effects of static electricity firsthand through a hands-on experiment with a Van de Graaff generator. The classroom activities allowed students to explore the transfer of energy in an interactive and memorable way.

During the experiment, students observed how static electricity builds and transfers, creating visible effects such as hair standing on end and small objects being attracted to the generator. These demonstrations helped reinforce concepts about energy, charge, and electrical forces that the students have been learning in class.

Science teachers Ronald Maiuri and Kathleen Fisher emphasized the importance of experiential learning in helping students understand abstract concepts. “Seeing the effects of static electricity in real time helps students connect theory with tangible results,” Mrs. Kathleen Fisher said. “It’s hands-on experiments like this one that makes science exciting and accessible, and sparks genuine curiosity,” added Mr. Ronald Maiuri.

Students expressed enthusiasm and excitement while participating in the experiment. Many remarked on how fun it was to see energy in action, and how it deepened their understanding of the principles behind static electricity.
