Love Creek Elementary Welcomes Terrance Simien’s Creole4Kidz Program

Love Creek Elementary School recently welcomed Grammy Award–winning musician Terrance Simien and his nationally recognized Creole4Kidz program for a vibrant, hands-on cultural music experience that left students excited, engaged, and energized.

During the visit, students were immersed in the sounds and traditions of Zydeco music. In addition to the live performance, students participated in optional extension activities designed to deepen their understanding of the music and its cultural roots. Mr. Simien introduced students to the frottoir, also known as a rubboard, a signature instrument in Zydeco music, and guided them through simple steps to create their own wearable frottoirs to use during the performance.

All materials for the activity were generously provided by Freeman Arts, whose partnership helped make the interactive experience possible.

“Experiences like this are a powerful reminder of what happens when schools and community partners work together,” said Equetta Jones, principal of Love Creek Elementary. “Our students were not only entertained, they were learning, creating, and connecting to culture in meaningful ways. I am deeply appreciative of Terrance Simien, Freeman Arts, and all our partners who believe in collaboration and understand that when community comes together, our students truly thrive.”

The Creole4Kidz program was a perfect blend of music, culture, creativity, and hands-on learning. The visit provided students with an opportunity to experience the arts in an authentic and memorable way while reinforcing the importance of cultural awareness and community engagement.
