Love Creek Elementary School Crowns School Scripps Spelling Bee Champion

Vivi Thompson

Love Creek Elementary School recently held its annual Scripps School Spelling Bee. Each year the competition brings together classroom spelling champions for an exciting and educational competition focused on vocabulary development, confidence, and poise under pressure.

The event featured fourth- and fifth-grade classroom winners who advanced to compete in a traditional spell-down format, with one word presented per round. Ms. Lauren Morrissey served as the official record keeper for the competition, while Mrs. Bridgette Perrotta presented the words to the spellers.

“The spelling bee highlights so much more than spelling ability,” said Mrs. Bridgette Perrotta, fifth-grade teacher. “It showcases our students’ commitment to expanding their vocabulary, understanding word meanings, and rising to the challenge of performing with confidence and composure under pressure. The competition reinforces academic growth and self-confidence, and I am incredibly proud of every student who participated.”

The bee progressed through multiple rounds, with the competition narrowing to two finalists, Vivi Thompson and Charlotte Burton, by Round 4. As the event advanced into Round 17, students were challenged with unabridged words that they had not had the opportunity to practice beforehand, testing their adaptability and word analysis skills. The bee came to a close when fifth-grader Vivi correctly spelled the word “construe,” while Charlotte (fourth grade) was eliminated after misspelling “fettle.” Vivi went on to successfully spell the championship word, “curriculum,” securing first place in the Love Creek Elementary School Spelling Bee.

Cape commends all participating students for their hard work, perseverance, and commitment to learning, and congratulates the finalists for their outstanding performance. Events like the Scripps Spelling Bee continue to support literacy development while fostering confidence and academic excellence among students.

Vivi will go on to compete at the FSE Delaware Regional Spelling Bee on March 7, 2026. The event will be held at the Del Tech Terry Campus.
