Love Creek Elementary Celebrates the Power of Mentorship and Connection

Principal Equetta Jones and Cape Grad Kayla Hurst

Love Creek Elementary recently celebrated a story that highlights the profound impact of mentorship, encouragement, and human connection between educators and students.

Principal Equetta Jones and recent Cape Henlopen High School graduate Kayla Hurst have built a relationship that demonstrates how schools not only shape students’ futures but how students, in turn, can inspire their educators.

While interning at Love Creek Elementary last year as an aspiring school counselor, Kayla quickly became more than just a helper in the building, she became a source of joy and encouragement for Principal Jones. During her time at the school, she made a lasting impression by bringing positivity and laughter into daily life. “Even if I am having a rough day, you make me laugh,” Kayla once shared with Principal Jones, also promising that she would return to visit Love Creek as she pursued her college studies.

This week, Kayla fulfilled that promise. Now a first-year college student, she returned to Love Creek to reconnect with staff and students who had supported her journey. For Principal Jones, the visit was both inspiring and affirming. “Kayla came at a moment when I questioned my impact as a leader,” Jones reflected. “She reminded me that I do make a difference. I can’t wait to see who she becomes.”

Principal Jones also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Rhue for trusting Love Creek to play a role in Kayla’s path. Their shared story serves as a reminder that education extends beyond academics, it is built on relationships that empower both students and educators to grow.

The Cape Henlopen School District is proud to celebrate this story as an example of the strong bonds formed within its schools. It is through these connections that students are supported in pursuing their goals, while educators are reminded of the importance of their work and the impact they have each day.
