Love Creek and Milton Elementary Welcome Author as Part of the History Book Festival

Beth Kephart visited Love Creek and Milton Elementary Schools on September 25.

On Friday, September 25th, fourth and fifth grade students at Love Creek and Milton Elementary Schools enjoyed a one-of-a-kind visit with author Beth Kephart.

Beth Kephart is an award-winning author whose work spans memoirs, essays, poetry, young adult fiction and books for children’s picture books. A National Book Award finalist, Kephart has written more than 30 books and has received numerous honors. She is also an experienced writing teacher who has taught at the University of Pennsylvania where she received the Beltran Family Award. Her work often draws on history, personal stories, and the power of place. Mud Angels, illustrated by Roberto Innocenti, is among her recent books for young readers, and one she shared with students on her visit.

Mud Angels is an inspiring story about the kids who saved the city of Florence’s priceless art in the disastrous flood of 1966. The flood leaves the city in shambles, but volunteers take charge by helping others, cleaning up, and working together to rebuild their community.

A story about local kids in Florence using their kindness and courage to rebuild a community they care deeply about, was shared on the eve of a nor’easter that pummelled the Delaware beaches. The book inspired students with powerful messages of teamwork, compassion, and responsibility. District Elementary Literacy Specialist, Angela Shaeffer was delighted with the visit, “Ms. Kephart knows how to leave a lasting impression on her audience. It was wonderful to see how much the kids connected with the story.” Prior to the reading, Kephart engaged in a group discussion with students about their own art and how creativity and their imagination comes into play when creating pieces. She also shared Roberto Innocenti’s illustrative process, giving the students the opportunity to hear about and learn from his work, and to find inspiration through him during their own creative journies.

“This visit was a meaningful experience for the students that they will take with them beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Audrey Dempsey, Supervisor of Elementary Education and Early Learning. “The presentation encouraging them to spread kindness, community, and courage while continuing to grow as readers and creative thinkers. We are grateful to Jen Mason with the History Book Festival for bringing this exciting opportunity directly to our students!”
