Little Vikings Preschoolers Combine Literacy, STEM, and Fun in Leprechaun-Themed Learning Week

Chloe Borrome and Harrison Stommel

Little Vikings Preschool students enjoyed an exciting and enriching hands-on learning experience centered around their repeated reading of Pete the Cat and the Great Leprechaun Chase. The familiar story provided a strong foundation for building early literacy skills, as students eagerly engaged in discussions, made predictions, and developed a deeper understanding of the characters and storyline through each reading.

As part of the lesson’s activities, the class collaborated on a creative STEM challenge: designing and building their very own leprechaun trap. Working together, students shared ideas, made group decisions, and explored problem-solving strategies. Each child had the opportunity to contribute by choosing what materials and “bait” to include which ranged from colorful candy to shiny gold, encouraging creativity and ownership in the project.

Although the elusive leprechaun managed to escape the cleverly constructed trap, he didn’t leave empty-handed. In his place, students discovered a sweet surprise that became the basis for a math-focused activity. Using the treats left behind, students practiced important early math skills such as sorting, counting, and graphing, turning a playful moment into a meaningful learning experience.

Throughout the lesson, students strengthened key foundational skills across multiple areas, including literacy, math, teamwork, and critical thinking. The engaging combination of storytelling, hands-on building, and interactive problem-solving created a joyful learning environment where curiosity and collaboration thrived.
