Little Vikings Preschool Students Build Early Literacy Skills Through Hands-On Winter Themed Learning

Preschool students recently embraced the winter season through a week of hands-on, winter-themed learning activities designed to strengthen early literacy and developmental skills in fun and engaging ways.

The learning began with winter-themed story time, where students listened to age-appropriate books that introduced seasonal vocabulary and concepts. Building on those stories, students had the opportunity to practice letter writing by tracing letters in shaving cream. an activity that not only made learning playful, but also helped strengthen fine motor skills and support early handwriting development.

Students also used the letters in their own names to create snowmen, reinforcing letter recognition and name awareness. Another favorite activity was “ice fishing,” where they identified letters while participating in an interactive game that promoted early reading readiness and kept students actively engaged.

In addition, preschoolers explored a winter-themed sensory bin filled with igloos and winter animals. This activity encouraged imaginative play, language development, and sensory exploration, giving students opportunities to describe what they saw, felt, and imagined.

“Hands-on learning experiences like these are essential at the preschool level,” said Dr. Elizabeth Cherico, principal of Little Vikings. “By combining literacy, sensory exploration, and play, our students are building foundational skills in a way that is meaningful, developmentally appropriate, and joyful.”

Through these engaging activities, preschool students practiced key skills such as letter recognition, fine motor coordination, sensory processing, and early literacy foundations, all while learning about winter in a creative and memorable way. The week highlighted how purposeful play can support academic growth and foster a love of learning from an early age.
