Lewes Elementary Spanish Immersion Students Connect with Peers in Argentina Through Cultural Exchange

Fifth-grade students in the Spanish Immersion Program at Lewes Elementary School recently participated in an international cultural exchange with fifth-grade students from a bilingual school in Argentina, providing a unique opportunity to build global connections while strengthening their language skills.

The exchange began with students creating and sharing videos that highlighted fun facts about their schools, communities, and cultures. Through these presentations, students learned about daily life, traditions, and educational experiences in another country while sharing their own perspectives and experiences. To culminate the project, students participated in live Zoom question-and-answer sessions, allowing them to interact directly with their peers in Argentina. During the conversations, students asked questions, shared interests, and practiced their Spanish language skills in an authentic and engaging setting.

"This cultural exchange gave our students a meaningful opportunity to use Spanish for real communication while connecting with kids their own age from another part of the world," said Veronica De Bartolo, Lewes Elementary 5^th grade Spanish Immersion teacher. "The experience helped students build confidence in their language abilities, develop cultural awareness, and recognize the many similarities and differences that make our global community so unique."

While project provided students with valuable opportunities to strengthen their bilingual communication skills, it also fostered curiosity, and a deeper understanding of global cultures. Through these authentic interactions students gained a broader perspective of the world and created memorable connections that extended beyond the classroom.
