Lewes Elementary School Student Leadership Team Empowers Young Voices and Drives School-Wide Initiatives

Lewes Elementary School launched its current Student Leadership Team (SLT), this winter. This group of motivated and inspiring students were selected to help plan and lead school-wide events and initiatives throughout the academic year.

The SLT was created to foster a sense of responsibility, collaboration, and creativity among students, while giving them a platform to share ideas, take initiative, and make a positive impact on the school community.

“These students are the future leaders of our community, and we believe in empowering them now,” said Dr. Kimberly Corbidge, Lewes Elementary Principal. “This team gives students a voice and helps them develop critical skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership, all while bringing students, staff and families together for the same purpose.”

This year, the team has worked hard behind the scenes to prepare and complete two major projects. One project was focused on a school-wide initiative, while the other was community-based. “I was very impressed with our students in their ability to plan, promote, and execute the first ever Lewes Elementary talent show,” said Marisa Wengryn, Speech & Language Pathologist and SLT advisor. “Their attention to detail and ability to work together for a common goal – a successful and fun talent show for the students and families at Lewes Elementary – was very impressive.”

For their community project, the students organized a donation drive for the Humane Animal Partners in Midway. “The highlight of this project for the students was having the opportunity to hand deliver the donations they collected to the Humane Animal Partners organization,” said Brennan Clarke, MLL Teacher and SLT advisor. “During the delivery they met with staff to learn about the positive impact their donations will have on the shelter and were able to spend some time with an adoptable puppy name Kiki.”

Members are selected through a combination of an application process and staff recommendations, highlighting students who show leadership, initiative, and a strong sense of community.

“Our hope is that parents, teachers, and students alike are excited to see the positive changes and fresh ideas this leadership group will continue to bring to the school in the years to come,” Dr. Corbidge concluded.
