Lewes Elementary Kindergarteners Bring “Balloons Over Broadway” to Life

Kindergarten students at Lewes Elementary School recently celebrated a beloved holiday tradition through a blend of reading, creativity, and hands-on learning. As part of a seasonal literacy activity, students read Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade by Melissa Sweet, a picture book that tells the history behind the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.

Inspired by the story, the young learners designed and constructed their own colorful balloon creations, using imagination and problem-solving skills to bring their ideas to life. The project culminated in a festive parade through their school, where students proudly showcased their handmade balloons while classmates and staff lined the hallways to cheer them on.

The activity not only connected students to a widely cherished holiday event but also fostered creativity, collaboration, and a joyful sense of community throughout the school.
