Students across four Cape Henlopen School District schools were treated to an unforgettable, high-energy performance by Hip Hop Fundamentals, an award-winning team of professional breakdancers who teach Hip Hop through music, movement, and storytelling. This talented group of Philadelphia artists was brought to schools through the Freeman Arts Education program.

Hip Hop Fundamentals brought their interactive assembly program to Milton Elementary, Rehoboth Elementary, Lewes Elementary and the Little Vikings Preschool. The program included blending breakdancing, storytelling, and audience participation into a dynamic lesson on resilience, creativity, and teamwork. It also covered topics like foundational dance, rhythm, and performance skills all while honoring hip hop’s cultural roots.

Each performance connected the art of hip hop to core educational themes, from self-expression and problem-solving to the power of community. Students not only watched the professional dancers perform but also joined in on rhythm, movement, and reflection activities that emphasized inclusion and positive energy.

“Hip Hop Fundamentals had our students completely engaged from start to finish,” said Dr. Clara Conn, of Milton Elementary School. “They combined fun and movement with meaningful messages about respect, perseverance, and believing in yourself. Things that are very important for our students to hear.”

Based in Philadelphia, Hip Hop Fundamentals is the only hip hop education company in the world recognized by the U.S. Department of State. Their mission is to use the roots of hip hop, born from struggle and creativity, to inspire young people to think critically, express themselves, and make positive changes in their communities.

“The energy in the room was exciting,” said Dr. Kimberly Corbidge, Principal at Lewes Elementary. “Our students saw that learning can happen in many forms, through music, art, and movement, and that everyone has a story worth telling.”

The assemblies were part of the district’s ongoing commitment to providing students with culturally responsive, engaging experiences that foster connection, creativity, and confidence.
