Frederick D. Thomas Middle School Hosts Free Book Shop for Students and Families

On December 11 and 12, the Frederick D. Thomas Middle School (FTMS) Library was transformed into a Free Book Shop, offering all students the opportunity to select a free book for themselves in a welcoming and festive environment. Students were also encouraged to choose additional books for younger family members, helping extend the joy of reading beyond the school walls.

The event was made possible through the generosity of student families and community members, who donated gently used books, games, and puzzles. Every item available at the Free Book Shop was donated, ensuring that students had access to a wide variety of reading materials and activities at no cost.

AVID students, along with FTMS staff members, volunteered their time to support the event by assisting students and wrapping books for those who wished to give them as gifts. This added a special touch to the experience and helped create a festive, stress-free atmosphere for everyone involved. More than 325 FTMS students participated in the Free Book Shop, taking advantage of the opportunity to build their personal libraries and share the gift of reading with family members.

FTMS Librarian Mrs. Carri Davis expressed her enthusiasm for the event, saying, “We hope to do this again next year. The students absolutely enjoyed coming in and shopping for themselves and family members. It was a fun and stress-free time for them, and what better thing is there than getting books into the hands of our students?”

Frederick D. Thomas Middle School is grateful to all who donated and volunteered, helping make the Free Book Shop a meaningful experience that promoted literacy, generosity, and a love of reading throughout the school community.
