On Thursday, April 10, two teams of students from Frederick D. Thomas Middle School visited Delaware State University for the 2025 Jr. Solar Sprint Competition. The Junior Solar Sprint is part of a national competition in which students build and race solar-powered model cars. It is co-sponsored in Delaware by the DNREC Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy and the Delaware Technology Student Association (TSA). The students worked over several months to build model cars powered by solar photovoltaic cells, better known as solar panels. The team of Kalieah Boyer, Jaelynn Martin, Billy Petrone, and Sam Schubert placed third in the Portfolio Competition, and a team consisting of Zaydin Hutchison, Natalie Malago, Parker Matthews, and Samatha Matthews won two of their races. Fred Thomas Middle School was one of eleven total teams (7 total from Delaware) to participate in the competition.
