Fifth Grade Student Leaders Create Gratitude Rock Garden in Memory of Classmate
Lewes Elementary’s Student Leadership Team, led by the fifth-grade student leaders, finished out their year by creating a beautiful and meaningful gratitude rock garden as part of their community-impact initiative. This special space includes a dedicated memorial section honoring Zayden Chandler, a beloved classmate who passed away from cancer and would have been a member of this year’s fifth-grade class.
The garden, located on the back side of the playground facing Fred Thomas Middle School (FTMS), was designed to inspire kindness, reflection, and connection throughout the school community. Students invite community members to visit the garden, take a rock as a token of gratitude or encouragement, and contribute their own hand-painted rocks to grow the collection.
“This project was created to make a positive difference and remember Zayden in a way that brings people together,” said Marisa Wengryn, Student Leadership Team Advisor. “We hope it continues to grow as a symbol of hope, love, and unity.”
The rock garden stands as a testament to the power of student leadership, compassion, and the lasting impact of one special classmate.
