Community Basketball Night Brings Students, Parents, and Police Together

Community Basketball Night Brings Students, Parents, and Police Together

The Frederick D. Thomas Middle School (FTMS) gym was filled with energy, cheers, and friendly competition as students, parents, and members of the Lewes Police Department came together for one unforgettable Community Basketball Night.

The evening tipped off with the highly anticipated Students vs. Parents matchup. Students came out strong, using their speed and quick ball movement to build early momentum. Parents answered with experience, physical defense, and smart teamwork. Mackenzie Hay, Rob Myers, Jack Frederick, and Jason Pease represented the FTMS parents! The crowd roared as players on both sides knocked down big shots and dove for loose balls. Laughter echoed throughout the gym as parents and students playfully guarded one another and celebrated great plays. Unfortunately, the FTMS boys’ team was defeated by their parents by 20 points.

After a short break, the action continued as students took on officers from the Lewes Police Department. Officers Isiah Brown, Lucas Hudson and Corporal Casey Crapps put up a tough fight! While the officers brought size and strength to the court, the FTMS boys basketball team relied on hustle and sharp shooting to keep the game competitive. James Frederick ran circles around the officers with seven three-point shots. Smiles never left the floor, and officers cheered on students just as enthusiastically as their own teammates. The FTMS boys won by a nail-biting two points.

Although the scoreboard kept track of the points, the true purpose of the night went far beyond wins and losses. The event strengthened connections between families, students, and local law enforcement while raising funds for upcoming school activities.

By the final buzzer, high-fives, group photos, and shared smiles made one thing clear: Community Basketball Night was a powerful reminder that when schools and local organizations come together, everyone wins.
