Cape Welcomes Children’s Author to Schools

On October 22, three Cape Elementary Schools welcomed a children’s book author to their building to visit and speak with students. The visit was part of a new Children’s Author Series, made possible through a partnership with Browseabout Books and the Lewes Public Library. The initiative aims to inspire a love of reading and writing by connecting students directly with celebrated children’s authors.

The series kicked off with a special visit from Laura Gehl, award-winning author of over 50 picture books including Elevator on 74th Street, Except When They Don’t, and Peep and Egg: I’m Not Hatching. Gehl spent a part of the day engaging with students at Milton, Lewes and Rehoboth Elementary Schools, sharing stories about her writing process, answering questions, and reading from her latest book, Elevator on 74th Street.

That evening, families were invited to the Lewes Public Library for an interactive reading and discussion, followed by a book signing.

“The opportunity for students and families to meet an author in person makes the reading and writing experience come alive,” said Dr. Audrey Dempsey, Supervisor of Elementary Education and Early Learning. “This partnership allows us to extend learning beyond the classroom while fostering a deeper appreciation for storytelling and creativity.”

Through the Children’s Author Series, Cape, Browseabout and Lewes Public Library hope to bring a variety of authors to schools throughout the year, ensuring that each elementary school has the chance to host an author visit. “Collaborations like this strengthen our community’s connection to literacy,” said Jennifer Noonan, Children’s Librarian at Lewes Public Library. “It’s exciting to see local students engage so enthusiastically with authors and books. We look forward to continuing this partnership and bringing more opportunities like this to the students at Cape!”

The district extends its gratitude to Browseabout Books and the Lewes Public Library for their ongoing partnership in promoting literacy, imagination, and the joy of reading for all students!
