Cape Students Participate in DelDot Bridge Building Contest

On Thursday, April 10, students from Cape Henlopen High School, Beacon Middle School and Frederick D. Thomas Middle School competed in the DelDOT bridge design competition held at Polytech High School. The Cape High team consisted of students who are currently part of a yearlong internship program with Pilottown Engineering and who plan to enter the field of engineering upon graduation. The team consisted of Jaxon Clampitt, Jenna Reinhold, and Sophia Herrera under the advisement of Jim Baker from Pilottown Engineering. The "BMS Bridges" team consisted of Emma Lewis, Jack Willmot, Andrew "AJ" Maggitti, and Jaxson Ceman, with advisement by Tech Ed teacher Dr. Anthony Carmen, while Fred Thomas Middle School had two teams participate that included . The Fred Thomas teams included Julia Moore, Sophia Connelly, and Casey Carr, and a second team included Korban Maedler, Dimitry Christodoulou, Albert Feliciani and Cameron Corrozi. The Fred Thomas Teams were advised by Tech Ed Teacher, Mr. Paul Freel.

Teams who participated in the competition were tasked with researching bridge designs, drafting a concept, building, and testing multiple prototype bridges, and then had to compete in the presentation and bridge testing event. While attending the event, students were able to visit with engineering companies and learn about careers and technologies in the Civil Engineering field. 

The event is made possible by DelDOT and provides students with a hands-on engineering competition experience. It’s specifically designed for those who are interested in the math, science and engineering fields and inspires students to consider careers in transportation and civil engineering.
