Cape Recognizes GEM Employees at Board of Education Meeting

Dr. Jenny Nauman, Mr. Jon Day, Dr. Alison Myers and Mrs. Kristin DeGregory

The Cape Henlopen School District is proud to recognize two outstanding employees who exemplify dedication, commitment, and service to students, families, their colleagues and the community. At the Regular Board of Education meeting, held on Thursday, September 25, Cape Henlopen High School teacher, Mr. Jonathon Day and Substitute teacher Mary Jane Hoffman were honored with the district’s Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Award, which celebrates staff members who consistently exceed expectations in meaningful and visible ways. Recipients demonstrate initiative, innovation, leadership, and a strong commitment to excellence.

Jon Day has been recognized for his outstanding commitment and leadership. Over the summer and into the start of this school year, Mr. Day dedicated countless hours to preparing for Homecoming events. As Student Government Advisor, he scheduled summer meetings to ensure student leaders had the opportunity to plan, and with Homecoming scheduled earlier than usual, he began organizing as early as May. In addition to coordinating schoolwide events, Mr. Day has created new leadership opportunities for students, including the launch of a club forum and a Schoology group to increase student engagement. Beyond his advisory role, he is a highly respected teacher of American History, Sociology, and Psychology, known for going above and beyond to support his students each day.

Also receiving recognition is Cape Henlopen High School substitute teacher Mary Jane Hoffman. A long-term Multilingual Learner substitute, Ms. Hoffman supports science, ELA, and social studies classrooms by differentiating assignments and providing targeted reading support using her expertise as a certified reading specialist. She is known for building strong, supportive relationships with students and for bringing creativity and enthusiasm into her work. Affectionately called “the Hoffinator” by her coteacher, Ms. Hoffman’s commitment extends beyond the classroom, where she invests personal time in preparing differentiated lessons and even creating artistic baked goods to support the school’s band and theater programs. Her dedication has left a lasting impact on both students and staff at Cape Henlopen High School.

“Mr. Day and Ms. Hoffman truly embody what it means to go the extra mile,” said Mrs. Kristin DeGregory principal of Cape Henlopen High School. “Their dedication, creativity, and care for our students make a tremendous difference in our school community, and we are proud to celebrate their contributions with the GEM Award.”
