Cape High Student-Athletes Lead Morgan’s Message Mental Health Discussion at Frederick D. Thomas Middle School

Student-athletes from Cape Henlopen High School recently visited Morgan’s Message club members at Frederick D. Thomas Middle School (FTMS) on March 4. The purpose of the gathering was to facilitate an important conversation about student-athlete mental health as part of the Morgan's Message initiative.

During the session, high school athletes led breakout discussions with middle school students, exploring topics such as performance pressure, injuries and setbacks, burnout, and the challenges student-athletes face balancing academics, athletics, and social life. Using guided scenarios and conversation starters, students discussed how to recognize stress, support teammates who may be struggling, and build a team culture where it feels safe to talk about mental health.

The peer-led format created an open and supportive environment, allowing middle school students to learn from high school athletes who have experienced many of the same pressures and challenges. Casey VanDemark, advisor of the Morgan’s Message club at FTMS, emphasized the value of these conversations for younger students. “Mental health is just as important as physical health for student-athletes,” said VanDemark. “By having athletes from the high school lead these discussions, our younger students see and understand that it’s okay to talk about challenges, ask for support, and look out for their teammates. Creating that culture early can make a meaningful difference.”

The visit is part of the ongoing work of the Morgan’s Message club at the high school and at FTMS to help raise awareness about student-athlete mental health and reduce stigma surrounding conversations about emotional well-being.

Students and families are also invited to support the initiative by participating in the Morgan’s Message Walk scheduled for May 3 from 12-1 at Cape Henlopen High School.
