Cape Henlopen School District Names Terri Tipton 2027 Behavioral Health Professional of the Year

The Cape Henlopen School District is proud to announce that Ms. Terri Tipton, School Social Worker with the Sussex Consortium, has been named the district’s 2027 Behavioral Health Professional of the Year. This recognition honors her unwavering commitment to supporting students’ social, emotional, and behavioral well-being.

In her role with the Sussex Consortium, Tipton works closely with students who have diverse and complex needs, providing individualized support that helps them succeed both in and out of the classroom. Known for her compassionate approach and strong advocacy, she builds meaningful relationships with students and families, creating a safe and supportive environment where students feel valued and understood.

“The impact Terri has is felt immediately by students, families, and staff whose work continues long after a crisis moment has passed,” said Sussex Consortium Assistant Principal, Pam Willmot. “She consistently brings together compassion, clinical skill, and relentless follow-through in a way that changes the lives of those she works with.”

Tipton collaborates with teachers, administrators, and support staff to develop and implement strategies covering a range of student needs. Her work not only supports student success but also strengthens the overall school community by fostering understanding, empathy, and resilience.

In addition to her behavioral health support, she works to strengthen the culture of belonging at Cape Henlopen High School. She’s the student advisor for Key Club and has coordinated with the Best Buddies club to create inclusive activities that bring students together for genuine interaction. These activities become powerful interactions that foster and build peer connection, reduce isolation and reinforce that every student belongs.

Colleagues describe Tipton as a trusted resource and a tireless advocate who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure students receive the support they need. Her ability to connect with students, especially during challenging times, has made a profound difference in their lives.

“I am truly honored to receive this recognition,” said Tipton. “It is a privilege to work with the students and families at Cape each day and to have such supportive and dedicated colleagues, who are always willing to step-up and step-in to help. Building relationships and helping students feel safe, supported, and empowered is at the heart of what I do, and I’m grateful to be part of a community that both values and takes pride in supporting the needs of the whole child.”

The Behavioral Health Professional of the Year award recognizes outstanding individuals who are health care practitioners or human service providers, offering services for the purpose of improving individual mental health. As a district winner, Ms. Tipton will go on to represent Cape at the State level where the Secretary of Education will determine a state-wide winner.
