Cape Henlopen School District Honors Bus Driver and Bus Aide of the Year

Every school day begins and ends with a familiar face for thousands of Cape Henlopen students. Long before the first bell rings and after the final dismissal, the district's transportation team plays a vital role in ensuring students arrive safely while creating a welcoming environment that sets the tone for the day.

To recognize the dedication and professionalism of these essential employees, Cape recently honored two outstanding members of its Transportation Department for their exceptional service during the 2025-2026 school year.

SCOPE bus driver Sandy Adelson was named the Cape Henlopen School District Bus Driver of the Year, while Sue Dembo was recognized as the district's Bus Aide of the Year.

Mr. Adelson, who transports students attending the district's SCOPE program, was selected for his unwavering commitment to students and his ability to expertly manage one of the district's most dynamic transportation routes. As students continually enroll in and transition from the program throughout the school year, Adelson adapts seamlessly while maintaining strong communication with school administrators and detailed route information for substitute drivers. Known for building meaningful relationships with the students he serves, Adelson consistently goes above and beyond to support both students and fellow transportation staff. His honesty, integrity, and willingness to assist wherever needed have made him an invaluable member of the district's transportation team.

Ms. Dembo earned the Bus Aide of the Year recognition for her outstanding dedication to student safety and well-being. Throughout her career, she was known for going the extra mile to build trusting relationships with students and their families while working closely with her driver and school administrators to ensure every child experienced a safe, positive ride to and from school. Although Ms. Dembo retired in June, her impact continues to be felt. She spent time preparing those who will follow in her footsteps, ensuring they had the knowledge and resources needed to continue the caring environment she helped create. Even in retirement, Ms. Dembo plans to remain connected to the district by serving as a substitute bus monitor during the upcoming school year.

"Our drivers and bus aides are often the first and last school district employees our students see each day, and that responsibility extends far beyond transportation," said Mr. Richard Crisci, Supervisor of Transportation. "Sandy and Sue exemplify what it means to care for students with compassion, professionalism, and consistency. They build relationships, create a sense of trust, and always put students first. We are incredibly grateful for the example they set and the positive impact they have made on our district."

Director of Operations Dr. Jason Hale said the recognition reflects the important role transportation professionals play in supporting student success. "Safe transportation is an essential part of every student's educational experience, and that safety is made possible by dedicated professionals like Sandy and Sue," Dr. Hale said. "Their commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and genuine care for students represent the very best of Cape Henlopen. We are proud to recognize their outstanding service and thank them for the difference they make in the lives of our students and families every day."
