Cape Henlopen School District and Mariner Middle School Recognize Outstanding Educators as GEM Award Recipients

Ali Peet and Nichole O'Brien were named the April GEMS for Mariner Middle School

Mariner Middle School is proud to recognize three exceptional educators as this month” GEM (Going the Extra Mile) award recipients: Ali Peet, Nichole O’Brien, and substitute Catherine Young. The trio was recognized at the Thursday, April 23 Regular Board of Education Meeting held at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School.

Mrs. Ali Peet, the school’s math specialist, and Mrs. Nichole O’Brien, the reading specialist, have been recognized for their collaborative leadership and significant impact on teaching and learning throughout the building. Together, they have helped transform classrooms into engaging, rigorous, student-led environments that support both teacher growth and student achievement.

Mrs. Peet leads the school’s math Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), supports science teachers, facilitates after-school curriculum meetings, and works closely with students in need of additional support. She also serves as a key member of both the School Improvement Team and the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) team. Mrs. O’Brien leads English Language Arts PLCs and collaborates with science and social studies teachers to integrate literacy across content areas. Like Mrs. Peet, she facilitates after-school curriculum meetings, supports struggling readers, and contributes to both the School Improvement Team and MTSS team.

“In addition to their instructional leadership, Mrs. Peet and Mrs. O’Brien co-lead the school’s mentoring program for new teachers, support the Targeted Tutoring Program, assist in classrooms, and provide small-group instruction for students,” said Principal Fred Best. “Their dedication, collaboration, and positive influence have made a lasting impact on the school community, and we are honored to have them on our team here at THE Mariner Middle School.”

Mariner Middle School also recognizes Catherine Young for her outstanding contributions in the classroom. Known for her engaging and student-centered teaching approach, Ms. Young consistently creates dynamic learning experiences that actively involve students.

Recently observed leading a “Building Thinking Classroom” activity, Ms. Young guided students through collaborative problem-solving while fostering meaningful discussion and critical thinking. She is widely recognized for her willingness to support students and staff, often stepping in to assist classrooms and even volunteering her time when needed. “Ms. Young is a loved substitute among the students,” said Dr. Emily Lehne, Mariner Assistant Principal. “They themselves praise her commitment and approachability. One student shared that she takes it upon herself to help them when they’re confused, instead of telling them to wait until their classroom teacher returns. This is a great example of how Ms. Young is always going the extra mile for the students she’s with on any given day.”

“Ali, Nichole, and Catherine truly exemplify the dedication and passion that define Mariner Middle School,” Best said. “We are grateful for the meaningful contributions they make each day to support our students, families and staff.”
