Cape Henlopen High School Teacher Dr. Michael Kardos Releases Fourth Novel, Fun City Heist

Dr. Michael Kardos

Cape Henlopen High School English teacher Dr. Michael Kardos has released his fourth novel, Fun City Heist, which officially launched on December 2. The new book continues Dr. Kardos’ tradition of crafting compelling stories rooted in familiar regional settings while showcasing his growth as a novelist.

The inspiration for Fun City Heist dates back more than two decades. In 2001, Dr. Kardos wrote a band breakup scene for a short story that never fully materialized. That spark remained with him, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to the idea and began developing it into what would become Fun City Heist.

A former professional musician, Dr. Kardos brings his creative background and storytelling experience into his writing. Fun City Heist marks his fourth published novel, with all his books set in New Jersey. While the setting remains true to that region, the newest novel also includes subtle nods and influences inspired by Rehoboth, adding another layer of familiarity for local readers. The novel has already received significant recognition, including a full-spread feature in Publishers Weekly, highlighting the book’s impact and reach within the literary community.

Dr. Kardos credits his experiences as a writer with strengthening his work in the classroom. “We’re all struggling with the same writing issues: how to start, how to end, how to make a piece of writing interesting, how to see it through…the main difference is I’ve been doing it longer,” said Dr. Kardos. “I want my students to understand that good writing doesn’t come all at once, and definitely not from having all the answers, but from trusting the process, and sticking with it even when it’s uncomfortable.”

Dr. Kardos shared that his favorite parts of the writing process include reading from his work, experiencing a strong writing session, and holding the finished book for the first time. Conversely, he notes that the most challenging part of writing is starting something new. “Every time you begin a new project, it feels like you don’t know how to write at all,” he shared. “You never feel like you know what you’re doing when you start, but that’s part of the process.”

Cape Henlopen High School celebrates Dr. Kardos’ accomplishment and is proud to recognize his continued success as both an educator and an author. His work serves as an inspiration to students, demonstrating the power of creativity, perseverance, and storytelling. Other novels by Dr. Kardos include, One Last Good Time, The Three-Day Affair, Before He Finds Her, and Bluff. Dr. Kardos is also the author of The Art & Craft of Fiction: A Writers Guide.
