Cape Henlopen High School Senior Mason Furman Receives Principal Nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy

Cape Henlopen School District is proud to share that Cape Henlopen High School senior Mason Furman has received a Principal nomination to the United States Naval Academy from U.S. Senator Chris Coons. A Principal nomination is an exceptionally competitive and prestigious distinction, awarded to candidates who rise to the top of a rigorous selection process. Students must complete an extensive application that includes a strong academic record in advanced coursework, competitive standardized test scores, demonstrated leadership in school and community activities, athletic participation, physical fitness assessments, letters of recommendation, and a formal interview. Nominees are evaluated not only on academic excellence, but also on character, integrity, resilience, and a clear commitment to serving as an officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. Mason’s selection reflects his outstanding achievement, leadership, and dedication to service.

The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is one of the nation’s premier service academies, preparing young men and women to become officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Securing a nomination is a rigorous process that includes an extensive application, interviews, and demonstrated excellence in scholarship, athletics, and leadership.

Mason is the second student from Cape Henlopen High School in the past two years to earn a Principal nomination to the Naval Academy, an accomplishment that underscores both his individual dedication and the strength of Cape’s academic and leadership programs. “The Principal nomination from Senator Coons is something I am forever grateful for, but wouldn’t have been able to achieve without the support of the community around me,” Mason said. “I’d like to thank Cape Henlopen High School and its staff for all the guidance and support they have provided throughout my journey. This school truly has something unique to it, that being the nurturing and enriching environment it creates for students to flourish in their future. Because of this school, its supportive staff, and enriching environment, I am now able to pursue an academic and professional career in the Navy through the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; a true dream of mine. So, I thank all who have supported me all the way through and as always GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!”

JROTC Colonel Edward Dowgin praised Mason’s achievement and character. “Mason exemplifies the qualities we strive to develop in our cadets, discipline, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving something greater than himself,” said Colonel Dowgin. “Earning a Principal nomination to the Naval Academy is extraordinarily difficult, and this recognition reflects his hard work, resilience, and leadership.”

Cape Henlopen High School Principal Kristin DeGregory also commended Mason’s accomplishment. “We are incredibly proud of Mason and the example he sets for his peers,” said Mrs. DeGregory. “His nomination is a testament to his academic dedication, leadership within our school community, and unwavering commitment to his future goals.”

Dr. Jenny Nauman, Superintendent of the Cape Henlopen School District, shared her pride in the accomplishment. “A Principal nomination to the Naval Academy is truly extraordinary,” said Dr. Nauman. “This honor speaks to Mason’s character, work ethic, and commitment to something bigger than himself. It also reflects the incredible support system around him, including his teachers, mentors, and of course his family.
