Cape Henlopen High School AP Biology Students Gain Hands-On Experience with Gene Editing Technology

Students in Cape Henlopen High School's Advanced Placement (AP) Biology program recently participated in an immersive, hands-on learning experience at the Gene Editing Institute located on the University of Delaware's STAR Campus. The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to explore the rapidly evolving field of biotechnology while working directly with cutting-edge CRISPR gene-editing technology.

During the laboratory experience, students conducted experiments that allowed them to edit the genes of bacteria using CRISPR, a revolutionary tool that enables scientists to make precise changes to DNA. The experience brought classroom concepts to life as students engaged in authentic scientific practices and gained firsthand insight into techniques currently being used in research, medicine, and biotechnology industries around the world.

This marks the second consecutive year that Cape Henlopen High School AP Biology students have participated in the program, further strengthening the connection between classroom learning and real-world scientific applications.

"Our students spend a great deal of time learning about genetics, DNA, and biotechnology in the classroom, but having the opportunity to work with CRISPR technology in a professional laboratory setting takes that learning to an entirely different level," said AP Biology teacher Rachael Smith. "Experiences like this allow students to see themselves as scientists, apply their knowledge in meaningful ways, and gain exposure to emerging fields that may inspire future college and career pathways."

Throughout the day, students worked alongside trained professionals, utilized advanced laboratory equipment, and followed scientific protocols like those used by researchers in the field. The experience reinforced key AP Biology concepts while introducing students to the collaborative and innovative nature of modern scientific research.

The Gene Editing Institute's educational programs are designed to increase student access to biotechnology and inspire the next generation of scientists, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
