Cape Educators Showcase Innovative Math Instruction at Professional Learning Conference

Cape Henlopen School District educators recently shared the district's innovative approach to mathematics instruction during a professional learning presentation highlighting how Bridges Concept Quests are being integrated into elementary classrooms to deepen student understanding, increase engagement, and provide equitable access to rigorous mathematics learning.

The session was led by Milton Elementary School Math Specialist Leigh Rupar and District Elementary Math Specialist Jill Wittman, who demonstrated how Cape teachers are embedding Concept Quests into whole-group instruction to enrich core mathematics lessons.

Rather than serving as a standalone activity, Concept Quests are intentionally used to launch, enhance, or extend Bridges instructional units, encouraging students to think critically, collaborate with peers, and engage in meaningful mathematical dialogue.

The presentation emphasized several key principles that guide the district's implementation:

• Providing equitable access to rich mathematical tasks for all students, regardless of prior achievement.
• Encouraging productive struggle through high-level cognitive tasks where solution strategies are not immediately obvious.
• Helping students develop confidence and see themselves as capable doers of math.
• Offering students meaningful opportunities to make choices in their learning while building reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Rupar and Wittman also highlighted the strong connection between Concept Quests and the district's ongoing implementation of Building Thinking Classrooms, a research-based instructional framework that places problem solving at the center of mathematics learning.

"Our goal is to create classrooms where students are doing the thinking," said Leigh Rupar, Milton Elementary School Math Specialist. "Concept Quests provide students with authentic opportunities to solve problems in new and meaningful ways. Rather than simply mimicking a procedure demonstrated by the teacher, students draw upon their prior knowledge, test ideas, collaborate with classmates, and develop a deeper understanding of math concepts."

Throughout the presentation, Rupar and Wittman explained that successful implementation depends not only on rich mathematical tasks, but also on intentional instructional practices. Teachers prepare purposeful questions, strategically use mathematical manipulatives, and establish collaborative learning structures that encourage students to grapple with challenging ideas while explaining and defending their thinking.

"One of the core messages we shared is that problem solving is what you do when you don't already know what to do," said Jill Wittman, District Elementary Math Specialist. "By incorporating Concept Quests into our whole-group instruction, we're creating learning experiences where every student has access to rigorous math while developing perseverance, mathematical reasoning, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems. These experiences align perfectly with our district's commitment to Building Thinking Classrooms and ensuring every student has opportunities to think deeply about mathematics."
