Cape District Engages Students, Families, and Staff in Student Code of Conduct Review

Logan Erickson meets with Supervisor of Student Services Dr. Luis Cosme to provide his insight on the Student Code of Conduct.

On April 16, students from Cape middle schools and high school joined a group of district and building administrators, staff, and parents/guardians for a joint review of the District’s Student Code of Conduct, highlighting the importance of shared input that shapes school policies.

Attendees came prepared with thoughtful feedback on the current code of conduct including what was working, as well as identifying areas that could benefit from updates based on the true day to day procedures in schools.

A key focus was strengthening student voice, as they were able to provide important insight and perspective on how the code of conduct applies to their daily experiences. This open dialogue allowed participants to explore how expectations are communicated, understood, and implemented across different school settings.

“Gaining feedback on the Student Code of Conduct is a critical step in ensuring that expectations are clear, fair, and reflective of the entire school community,” said Dr. Luis Cosme, Supervisor of Student Services. “By incorporating diverse perspectives, schools can create guidelines that not only promote accountability but also foster a positive and supportive learning environment.” This collaborative approach also aims to help build trust, encourages shared ownership, and ensures that policies remain responsive to the evolving needs of students and their schools.

“We deeply value the voices of our students, families, staff, and administrators as we continue refining the Student Code of Conduct to ensure it reflects the lived experiences of our school community,” said Superintendent, Dr. Jenny Nauman. “This collaborative work is not a one-time event, but an ongoing commitment. It’s a great example of how as we move forward in establishing a Student Advisory Group, students will be afforded additional opportunities to share feedback, make their voice heard, and help guide district decision-making in meaningful ways.”
