Beacon Middle School Students Visit U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Through Generous Community Donation

Owner of Rosenfeld's Jewish Deli, Warren Rosenfeld, visit Beacon 8th Grade students ahead of their trip to Washington DC.

For the second consecutive year, Beacon Middle School eighth grade students had the opportunity to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum thanks to the generosity of Warren Rosenfeld and the Rosenfeld’s Holocaust Education Fund held at The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.

Rosenfeld, owner of Rosenfeld's Jewish Delicatessen and son and grandson of a Holocaust survivors, continues to support Holocaust education as a way to preserve remembrance and encourage future generations to learn from history. “Providing students with the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Museum is incredibly important to me because it keeps these stories alive for the next generation,” said Rosenfeld. “When students walk through the exhibits, hear survivor experiences, and see history firsthand, it becomes more than something they read in a textbook or on the internet. My hope is that these experiences inspire empathy, understanding, and a commitment to standing against hatred and intolerance.”

Prior to the trip, Rosenfeld visited Beacon Middle School to speak with students, staff and chaperones to share his family’s personal Holocaust history, helping students better understand the significance of the museum visit and the importance of remembrance.

This years’ experience expanded into a two-day, one-night educational trip to Washington D.C., allowing 117 students to engage in meaningful historical learning experiences, including a visit to the Holocaust Museum.  Beacon Middle School teacher and trip coordinator Dr. Christopher Maddox said the experience left a lasting impact on students. “This trip gave our students the opportunity to connect classroom learning to real-world history in a powerful way” said Maddox, ELA/U.S. History teacher. “By reflecting on the experiences of those who live through the Holocaust, students are inspire to speak up against injustice, show compassion, and take seriously their responsibility as active thoughtful members of their communities.”

Beacon Middle School and the Cape Henlopen School District extend its sincere gratitude to Mr. Rosenfeld, for his continuous generosity in helping to support this unforgettable experience for students.
