Beacon Middle School Students Step Up for a Day of Service and Community Impact

Students volunteering at Artists Rising

Seventh-grade students and members of the National Junior Honor Society at Beacon Middle School recently spent a day giving back to the local community through a hands-on service experience designed to inspire leadership, responsibility, and civic engagement.

Four groups of students proudly represented Beacon and Cape across several community sites, including Cape Henlopen State Park, the City of Rehoboth Beach, Artist Rising’s Creative Market, and the Beacon Middle School campus.

At the Cape Henlopen State Park, students took part in a beach clean-up, met with park employees, and learned about the local ecosystem and how to maintain a balance between environmental preservation and community development.

At the Creative Market in Rehoboth Beach, students contributed by maintaining furniture, performing gardening tasks, picking up litter, and helping to tidy up the main building—enhancing the space for local artists and visitors.

Instead of heading off campus, the NJHS students stayed at Beacon Middle School and dedicated their time and energy to a full day of community service. With determination and teamwork, they tackled a wide range of projects including cleaning the school grounds, organizing the building, restoring the sports shed, removing old sports fencing, gardening, and picking up litter across campus.

The group serving the City of Rehoboth Beach met Mayor Stan Mills, toured the Convention Center and Rehoboth Beach Museum, cleaned the beach and boardwalk, chalked “Thank You” notes at the fire department, and planted loblolly pines in Central Park to help preserve local beauty.

“This special day was more than just a field trip,” said Dr. Kathleen Sheehan, Principal of Beacon Middle School. “It was an opportunity for our students to take pride in meaningful work, connect what they learn in school to real-life impact, and show just how powerful young people can be when they come together to serve.”

Beacon’s students demonstrated remarkable dedication, teamwork, and compassion throughout the day. Their efforts not only refreshed shared spaces but also supported ongoing community projects, reinforcing the school’s commitment to shaping responsible, engaged citizens.
