District Mentoring Programs
The Cape Henlopen School District has two mentoring program partnerships, Connecting Generations and Pathways 2 Success. Each program promotes building positive relationships with students and recognizes the importance of connections. Guidelines for School Mentors & Volunteers
Background Checks
Volunteers do not need a background check/training with Creative Mentoring when they:
- are not going to have contact with a child (i.e., working in an office, making copies)
- are presenting to a class and will always be directly supervised by teacher/staff member
- are helping with a PTO/PTA project (i.e., distributing items from a fundraiser, PTO lunch, Book Fair, Fall Fest, etc…)
- are chaperoning field trips ** (see Board Policy 121 - link below)
- are a current teacher, paraeducator, an LCSW, or a police officer.
Volunteers need a background check and training through Creative Mentoring when they:
- are working/mentoring one on one with a student (reading, escorting, supporting, etc…)
- are working with a group but not directly supervised by a teacher or staff member (someone with ANY alone time with the student(s).
**Board Policy 121 (linked here) states that chaperones must have a Criminal Background Check (CBC) when supervising overnight trips or trips where staff will not be present with the students/groups. Chaperones are responsible for the cost of the CBC.
