Application Guidelines

If you need assistance in the application process, contact the Human Resources Department at (302) 645-6686.

    Procedures

    • If applicable, college placement folders and transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work must be uploaded into the application. Copies of transcripts will suffice until the time of employment at which point official transcripts are required.
    • When applicable, copies of current administrative certificates, teaching certificates, paraeducator permits, licenses, and/or other certificates should be uploaded into the application.
    • Each vacancy announcement has unique characteristics and requirements.  Thus, your file will not automatically be activated for each posting.
    • To activate your application for a posted vacancy, you will always need to apply for each position.
    • The application you submit will be kept active for one year.  After one year, you will need to reactivate your application. Please keep your application updated if you move, accept a job, change your telephone number, or obtain additional employment experience.

    Candidate Screening/Staff Appointments

    • "Qualified Applicants" are those who are eligible for professional certification, or who meet other minimum requirements, and have completed the application procedure.
    • The files will be checked for professional preparation, relevant experience, and adherence to the standards that relate to the job.
    • Accuracy, clarity, readability, and completeness with which the application is completed will affect its consideration.
    • When advertising for elementary teaching positions, preference is oftentimes given to those candidates who hold or are eligible for State of Delaware certification in elementary and special education.
    • All candidates who are qualified for employment might not be selected for an interview.
    • All offers of employment are subject to Board approval.
    • The Cape Henlopen Board of Education is the legal employing agency for the school district.  The Board has the power to appoint an employee based on the recommendation of the superintendent of schools.
    • All interviewed candidates will receive a letter informing them of the final decision to hire after the Board has taken action on the recommendation.

Professional Substitutes & Support Staff Substitutes

    • Prospective candidates who are interested in substitute teaching should apply through our online application system.
    • When the application file is complete, including a satisfactory criminal background check, a negative TB test, DE Child Protection Registry check, health certificate, transcript(s), and three references, you will be notified by email with login information.
    • Opportunities frequently exist for long-term substituting positions

    Miscellaneous Conditions of Employment

    • If an applicant has not previously established certification status with the Department of Education in Delaware, certification must be established as a condition of employment.  This will be done through the Delaware Department of Education web site: deeds.doe.k12.de.us.  Certification must be in the subject area for which application is made.  The PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II must be successfully completed.
    • The State of Delaware requires that all public school employees undergo a criminal background check to determine suitability for employment.  This must be completed within thirty (30) days of employment and is the responsibility of the employee.  All appointments are contingent upon the receipt of a satisfactory Criminal Background Check.  For an appointment or information, call 1-800-464-4357. Your background is also checked through the DE Child Protection Registry. Upon hire, a form will be required to be completed and returned for checking through DSYCF.
    • All new employees are required to receive a Mantoux tuberculin skin test or show proof of being tested within the past twelve (12) months.  This must be completed during the first fifteen (15) days of employment.
    • All new employees are also required to submit a Health Certificate.
    • The State of Delaware requires all new employees to be paid by direct deposit.  This is part of the conditions of employment.
    • The State of Delaware requires all new employees to be part of the lag payroll system.  This will be explained upon employment and is a condition of employment.
