Medications in School
Parents are requested to give medications at home and on a schedule other than during school hours. If it is necessary that a medication be given during school hours, the following procedures must be followed: - Only a school nurse is permitted to administer medications during school hours.
- All medications are to be kept in the nurse's office in a locked cabinet.
- Medications prescribed by the doctor must be sent in the original container with the proper labeling along with a note from the parent stating the time of the last dose and the time for the dose that is to be administered at school.
- Over the counter medications must be sent in the original packaging which includes directions for dosage.
- A permission form must be completed by a parent/guardian and turned in to the school nurse for all prescription and over-the-counter medications to be administered in school. (Please see Forms section of Nurse’s Office web site.)
- If your child requires asthma medication, an Asthma Action Plan needs to be completed by your doctor, updated every year and given to the nurse when the medication is brought in. (See Forms section.) The form can also be faxed by the physician to the nurse’s office.
- If your child has seizures, a Seizure Action Plan needs to be completed by your doctor, updated every year and given to the nurse. (See Forms section.) The form can also be faxed by the physician to the nurse’s office.
- If your child has food or insect allergies that require Benedryl and/or Epi Pen, an Allergy Emergency Plan needs to be completed by your doctor, updated every year and given to the nurse when the medication is brought in. (See Forms section.) The form can also be faxed by the physician to the nurse’s office.
